Our Project: Applying the CLEAR Framework for Prompt Engineering
Our project seeks to apply the CLEAR Framework for Prompt Engineering to various use cases in the fields of writing, research, and programming.
Concise
Focus on clarity and brevity when designing prompts. In order to receive precise and accurate responses, identify keywords and phrases for ChatGPT to analyze while omitting superfluous statements. Unclear and needlessly elaborate prompts will generate content that falls short of the user’s needs and expectations.
Logical
Focus on crafting structured and cohesive prompts. If you are introducing multiple concepts in a prompt, ensure that the relationships between them are evident and the ideas follow a logical flow. A logically structured prompt will allow ChatGPT to better comprehend the context of a user’s query.
Bad: “When using the scientific method, what steps come before the conclusion but after the hypothesis?”
Good: “Describe the steps in the scientific method, starting with forming a hypothesis and ending with drawing conclusions.”
Explicit
Provide unambiguous output specifications to produce the most useful response. Reduce the amount of irrelevant or unnecessary information by presenting precise instructions regarding the desired output format, content, or scope.
Bad: “Tell me about the American Revolution.”
Good: “Provide a concise overview of the American Revolution, emphasizing its causes, major events, and consequences.”
Adaptive
Maintain flexibility and customize prompts. This may require experimenting with phrasing or enhancing the prompt by excluding/including certain words or concepts. Adaptability in prompt engineering allows users to obtain the best possible results based on the details of their use case. Often, this means incorporating a new or altered approach based on the performance of Chat-GPT and the requirements of a user’s investigation.
Reflective
Continuously examine the utility of a response in order to evaluate and improve prompts. Does the response make sense? Is there unnecessary information? Is it beneficial to elaborate on a certain aspect of the response? Then, you may craft additional prompts to target these gaps in your responses.
Ethics and Inclusion
ChatGPT and other generative conversational AI systems provide a unique and powerful tool that may be applied to address a variety of challenges throughout numerous industries. While such an emerging technology promises many potential benefits, it also raises significant ethical concerns, primarily regarding plagiarism, accuracy, bias and exclusion. ChatGPT and other Large Language Models (LLMs) have the capacity to reinforce and propagate biases if the training data are not thoroughly examined and selected to ensure objectivity. For example, if certain demographics are underrepresented in a data set, the model may lack exposure to their perspectives, leading to responses that don’t fully represent or understand their viewpoints. Alternatively, biases—such as stereotypes about particular professions, genders, or communities—are likely to recur in generated responses. This can amplify harmful, inaccurate or fringe views on ChatGPT unless adequate and rigorous oversight is provided.
